Hello World: Why This Website Exists & Countering Creative Paralysis

Hello and welcome to my new website. I’m Matt and I’m a digital creative based in the UK.

I’ve created this website for two reasons;

  1. To post short updates (just like this post) on all my creative projects, partly for my own motivational encouragement and partly to share my progress with those who are interested.
  2. To share my knowledge as a digital creative in longer posts, to inspire and inform other digital creatives and to encourage networking.

Countering my ‘creative paralysis’

Another reason why this website exists is to counter ‘creative paralysis’, the problem of having too many ideas, wanting to put all of those ideas into action instantly and expecting perfection, leading to nothing productive getting done.

It’s something that I’ve only recently realised that I suffer from. It’s perhaps been exacerbated by being in lockdown, but it’s certainly something that, now that it has a name, is something I want to beat.

Building this website is part of that process. Firstly, having a hub for all my online activity is something I can use to track my progress. Secondly though, it’s given me an opportunity to employ a new mantra that I’m focusing on to counter my creative paralysis;

‘Done’ is better than ‘perfect’

This is something that I’d like to expand on in a future post. For now though, I’ll just say that this website was thrown together very quickly with this mantra very much in mind. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but I’ve held myself back because I didn’t think I could perfect the concept nor the implementation. One weekend though, I just decided to do something, anything, and this is the result. I’m pretty pleased with how it’s turned out.
